In January 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti – killing 230,000 people, injuring 300,000 and leaving more than 1 million homeless. This tragedy is the greatest natural disaster in recorded history in the Western Hemisphere.
The outpouring of prayers and support from caring individuals, schoolchildren, churches, civic groups, and businesses all over the globe has made an enormous difference in the lives of the many children and orphans.
Though many organizations have struggled to spend the funds donated to them, Hope for Haiti’s Children (HFHC) personnel have worked since 1995 to develop a trusted local Haitian network of Christian leaders who administer the programs in the field. This has allowed HFHC to spend $600,000 of the $1.1M donated for crisis relief with accurate record-keeping and full-receipt accountability. In addition, HFHC also partners extensively with other organizations, extending funds to start permanent rebuilding and relocation projects.
On November 6, 2010 HFHC’s Board adopted a long-term, 10-year plan entitled “Rebuilding Hope 2020”.
Ken Bever, HFHC Board Chair, remarked after the meeting, “What is so exciting is that this plan was jointly developed by HFHC’s Haitian and U.S. staff in conjunction with other non-profits to provide a comprehensive approach to those currently sitting in tents without jobs and permanent housing in Port-au-Prince.
