When mission team member, Chris Ederer, served in Haiti, he saw children sitting in classrooms crowded onto benches doing the best they could to focus and learn. When Chris returned home, he made a call to his friend Eric Jackson, President of Artcobell Corporation in Temple, Texas to see if he had any surplus school desks. And did he ever! All in all, Artcobell has collected three semi-truckloads full of new, but discontinued school desks.
This Spring, the U.S. Air Force flew all of the furniture into Haiti. Coordination of this effort was made possible through the Denton Humanitarian Assistance Program. Begun in 1985, the Denton Program was created to allow U.S. non-governmental organizations to use space available on U.S. military cargo planes to transport humanitarian goods to Haiti and other countries in need. The classrooms which receive these desks will have a better learning environment and the children will be encouraged to see the investment others are making in their education and motivation for them to be the best students they possibly can. Helen Keller once said: “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” HFHC is blessed to have partners like Chris Ederer, Eric Jackson, the entire Artcobell organization, and the U.S. Air Force who each use their resources and talent to accomplish something great for the children of Haiti.
